I Feel Better When I'm Dancing

Getting back into the rhythm of a new dance season.

Taking a break from dancing can be a nice change of pace.  It allows us to reset and have some time to explore the other aspects of our lives a little more.  But as every dancer knows, your feet will only stay away from the dance floor for so long before they become restless.  So as we embark on a new dancing season, its important to refocus our minds and bodies before we step into the studio.

When you begin a new dance season, it is normal to feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. You may even have moments of feeling overwhelmed from adjusting to a new commitment in your schedule.  You may worry about your skill level, fitness, or how you’ll fit back into your dance community. Just try to remind yourself that many dancers have been in your shoes, and you’re not alone in these feelings.  It’s also important to remember why you dance and how it drives your passion.  When you focus on the ‘why’, the ‘how’ will find a way.

One trick for getting yourself back in the routine, is to set small achievable gorls for yourself.  In the beginning of the season, just going to dance class is a small goal that can give. you a sense of acomplishment.  Then you can slowly build up your ambitions with bigger goals for yourself.  Maybe there is a particular step or combination you’ve been wanting to master, or maybe volunteering at your dance studio to help other dancers.  Whatever your goals may be, it gives you a purpose to your dancing and can help make you feel more fulfilled when you obtain them.

Another tip for returning dancers is to evaluate your skill level and look at where you’d like to be at the end of the season. There might be another dance style or class that you’d like to try, and haven’t been ready.  You can always talk to your teachers about opportunites that they think would be right for you.  Trying new disciplines will make you a more rounded performer and dancer.  Challenging yourself in a new or more advanced dancing style can be rewarding and grow your passion for dance even more.

It is also important when diving back in to any physical activity, it is important to listen to your body.  Make sure you are tuned into your needs, and be diligent about taking care of yourself above all else.  Staying hydated and having a proper diet is essential to staying in optimal shape for a physically demanding activity like dance.  Always try to plan time for stretching before class and give yourself time to cool down after class.  It will allow for your body to adjust to your new routine and movements that come along with a new dancing season.

One of the best ways to adjust your daily routine is to reconnect with your studio community.  Engage with your fellow dancers and instructors.  It is so important to have a sense of teamwork and togetherness in a group of dancers that will perform as one.  Having a support system that is able to relate to you and may be having similar struggles or worries, is so beneficial.  Talk to one another and help each other along the journey.  Connecting with one another will make you and your entire studio a stronger unit.

Most importantly, returning to dance should be fun!  Remember your passion and love for it.  Think about why you started to dance and why you continue to enjoy it.  It’s an amazing way to express yourself and embrace how it makes you feel.Focus your mindset on what dancing gives to you and your wellbeing.  The stresses of fitting it into your schedule will become secondary, and the benefits will greatly surpass any negatives.

Getting back into your dance class routine is an amazing opportunity for self-discovery and joy. Embrace each step of the journey, stay patient with yourself, and most importantly, let the rhythm guide you. With time, you’ll find your groove again and perhaps even discover new facets of your dance passion.  And a 5,6,7,8.....
